(Syracuse, NY) - The spring Healthy Pet Clinic on the north side of Syracuse returns to the campus of Assumption Church at St. Clare's Theatre on N. Salina Street on Sunday, May 20th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.  The initial Clinic of the 2012 spring season served nearly 70 dogs and cats of residents on Syracuse's north and east sides who were able to demonstrate financial need.

More than 40 volunteers with the Central New York Animal Welfare Coalition, including some of the top veterinarians in the region, ran an efficient operation on a sunny and breezy Sunday afternoon in April.  Pet owners were lined up hours before the doors open, but everyone was served.

For a fee of $10, Veterinarians perform exams, vaccinate for rabies, distemper and other illnesses. They also offer flea and tick preventative, offer various other services and educate pet owners on the importance of regular veterinary care. The CNYSPCA and SANS provide information on low cost spay/neuter opportunities.

The City of Syracuse clerk’s office will be on site to license dogs for an additional fee of $10 for fixed dogs and $20 for dogs not fixed. Cash only accepted.

The Onondaga County Health Department is supporting the Clinics by maintaining records of rabies vaccinations and supplying rabies tags.

Requirements: The clinic is for pet owners who live in the north and east sides of Syracuse with financial need. Pet owners must bring identification, proof of address and financial need. Dogs must be leashed and cats brought in carriers. Dogs that are aggressive must have muzzles. Please bring any current veterinary records.  Requested donation for the clinic is $10 per animal cash only.

A third spring clinic is scheduled for St. Clare’s Theatre on Sunday June 24th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

Does oneida county have anything like this. I know when to go for my dog rabbies shots, but how about a Healthy Pet Clinic like you did today?

We are not aware of Oneida County having a Healthy Pet Clinic like this.  There aren't any others in the greater Central New York region other than the Southside Clinic in Ithaca that is run by the Cornell Veterinary Hospital.

We would be glad to speak with people in Oneida County about organizing one in a similar fashion.  Currently, this all volunteer effort operates on a shoe string budget and has served nearly 500 animals  in the last nine months. Extending to Oneida County would be too big of a challenge to undertake at this time.

Thank you for your question and suggestion.

How do you decide who has "financial need"? My family isn't considered poor, but still can't afford to get our dogs shots unless we save for some months. It's ridiculous that no one ever takes into account the fact that people have bills and debt to pay which significantly lowers the amount of money I have to take home every 2 weeks... You should open this clinic up for any family who makes less than $60k.

Thank you for asking the question. This is an all volunteer effort which was created about one year ago to offer vaccinations and care to people with demonstrated financial need.

Your income level is considerably higher than those who we serve with the Healthy Pet Clinic's.  However, there are a few other alternatives. Onondaga County offers free rabies vaccinations.  The SPCA now offers some low cost care.  And the store Pet Smart offers some low cost vaccinations on occassionaly basis.
